Walk and Talk Therapy

Walk and Talk Therapy is much like normal counselling, however, instead of sitting in an office, we meet outside and take a walk as we talk. See below for a few of the possible benefits and challenges to help you consider whether it might be a suitable option for you. If you are interested in giving it a try, or have any questions about the practice, please get in touch.

What are the possible benefits?

  • Fresh air, exercise and a chance to be in nature.

  • A multi-sensory experience that can help you feel more present, with better connection between body and mind.

  • Being side-to-side may feel less intimidating than face-to-face, enabling you to feel more open.

  • Being in a neutral space can reduce the power imbalance between client and therapist, helping the client feel more comfortable.

  • The informality of the setting may lead to a stronger therapeutic bond.

  • Physical movement can promote psychological movement beyond ‘stuck’ points.

  • Therapeutic learnings may feel easier to access outside of therapy as they have been experienced in a more everyday setting.

  • The natural world is a non-judgemental place and can inspire us to be less judgemental of ourselves.

What are the possible challenges?

  • It is less easy to guarantee privacy and confidentiality in public spaces. While it is rare for passers-by to pay attention to our conversations, this can be a risk.

  • Some people may be hesitant to bring up difficult topics or to express emotion in a public environment.

  • Some find it easier to focus indoors, without the distractions of the outside world.

  • The weather can be unpleasant, however, this can help us observe how we deal with challenges.

Do I have to be fit to participate?

You will set the pace, so you only have to be fit enough to walk for 50 minutes at whatever speed suits you. We can also take breaks and sit on benches or the ground if needed.

Do I need any special equipment?

Just appropriate clothes and shoes for the weather, and perhaps a bottle of water. We will meet in parks where there are gentle footpaths, though you may choose to stray from them.

Where can we walk?

I offer Walk and Talk at Cannon Hill Park or Highbury Park.
